HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - An effort to require information about chiropractors' medical malpractice insurance settlements be made public was extended Tuesday to any medical professional with malpractice insurance.

The legislature's Insurance and Real Estate Committee voted 18-1 to send the amended legislation to the Senate floor.

A group of patients who suffered debilitating strokes after visiting chiropractors is pushing to make more information about chiropractors available to the public. The state Department of Public Health currently provides profiles about physicians on the agency's Web site. Those profiles include information about malpractice awards.

Chiropractors have complained that the original bill unfairly singled out their profession.

Rep. Kevin Witkos, R-Canton, who successfully amended the bill, said it makes sense to provide information about malpractice settlements for all medical professionals.

"Why wouldn't we want to have all the information that's available in order to make informed decisions," he asked.

The legislation awaits further action in the Senate.
