CHIROPRACTIC INFORMATION

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Patients of chiropractors who've been injured during treatment asked state lawmakers Monday to help the public learn more about these medical providers, including information about malpractice settlements.

The Judiciary Committee is considering a bill that would provide that information on the Department of Public Health's Web site, just like all licensed physicians.

Janet Levy, of Woodbridge, said she would have gone to a hospital for her stiff neck five years ago if she knew that her chiropractor was not a medical doctor, but had a doctorate of chiropractic medicine. Levy suffered a stroke and underwent emergency brain surgery after undergoing a chiropractic manipulation.

"In this day and age of information being at our fingertips, I believe that passage of bill 483 will not only save people from making bad health care choices, but will also save insurance companies from having to support the uninformed, needlessly injured victim," she said.

A similar bill was proposed last session. Chiropractors argued they were being unfairly singled out and that the risks from adjustments are very low.
